Don't you wonder why people wanted to live up high before cars? Well, I suppose they had horses and donkeys, but wouldn't they have had to walk up a lot of times?
I think it was a saftey thing - get up & away from any invaders. If anyone tried to storm the town they had the advantage of being higher up than the enemy & inside a walled city.
For the view! For the view! Oh, maybe to check to see who was sneaking into your harbor to rape and pillage too.
